2014 Epic
So at last I managed to go to Google's Youtube site and watch 2014 Epic, which I've heard so much about. It's a lovely little movie about the future of media in a world where Google reign's supreme. The premise is simple: It's presented as sort of a short documentary set in the year 2014, and it explains what events led up to the present day (that is, the year 2014's present day) media market. It begins with the invention of the Internet, talks about the founding of Amazon and Google, the impact of blogs, the purchase by Google of Blogger, and so on. According to the movies timeline, in 2008 Google and Amazon merge, forming Googlezon, a media and search giant through which media consumers get most of their information. In 2014 Googlezon releases Epic, a new kind of web service that presents every user with exactly the kind of news that user wants.
The movie is thought provoking indeed. I think it's supposed to be a bit dystopic, but the idea of a news source that gave me interesting and deep coverage of anything I wanted to read doesn't seem all bad to me, and not very unlikely either. Well well, we'll see what happens.
